Roof Fire Ratings: A Quick Guide

Roofing systems are not only tested by how impervious they are to high wind speeds, rainstorms, or hail impact damage–they are rated for fire resistance, as well. They are either classified into Class A, Class B, or Class C, depending on the material. • Class A. A roofing system with Class A fire ratings is generally considered the most ideal choice for any home. In fact, some building codes will even require you to have one installed, especially if you live in an area prone to wildfires. A Class A fire-rated roof is proven to be effective if they can last up to 4 hours before ignition, can resist 15 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off, or experience a maximum flame spread of up to 6 feet. Prime examples of a Class A fire-rated roofing material include clay and concrete tiles, slate, and asphalt fiberglass composition shingles. 

• Class B. This is the rating for roofing systems that can deliver moderate fire resistance. Pressure-treated shakes and shingles usually fall to this category. To get a Class B rating, a roof must be able to experience maximum flame spread of up to 8 feet, last an hour before ignition, and resist 8 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off. A Class A fire-rated roofing system remains the superior choice, but if you’re into the rustic charm of shakes and shingles, then a Class B system can still be a viable option.

• Class C. A roof with this fire rating can only provide effective resistance against light fire exposure. It can last up to 20 minutes before ignition, can resist 3 cycles of a gas flame turned on and off, and experience a maximum flame spread of up to 13 feet. Untreated wood shakes and shingles, particle board, and plywood are common Class C materials. These are roof coverings that no self-respecting contractor will recommend.
